Hamburg, October 15, 2024. Hamburg is preparing for the most important global mobility event of the coming year: Today, the concept for the UITP Summit 2025 was officially presented. In the presence of Daniela Kluckert, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, and Mohamed Mezghani, Secretary General of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), provided an overview of the planned program and key themes. In addition to the International Association of Public Transport, the City of Hamburg, Hamburger Hochbahn, MOIA, and Hamburg Messe und Congress are the local hosts of the leading congress for public transport and sustainable mobility. From June 15 to 18, 2025, more than 10,000 international visitors and 2,800 congress participants are expected in Hamburg. Already, 85 percent of the exhibition space has been sold, and the UITP Summit will also return to Hamburg in 2027.
Mohamed Mezghani, Secretary General of UITP, stated: "The UITP Summit will welcome the world of urban mobility to Hamburg not just once, but twice, with two editions. Hosting the UITP Summit is not only about the positive impacts on public transport and the local economy but also about the effects on the host city. The UITP Summit leaves a positive legacy to be proud of, and for Hamburg, this legacy will only grow. This is an incredible opportunity for UITP, our members, and delegates to build new relationships with our host city, a place with an admirable public transport system. I look forward to seeing what both editions will bring."
Dr. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, said: "With an innovative concept and a forward-looking strategy in the field of mobility transformation, we have qualified to host the UITP Congress, placing us at the center of the international mobility world in 2025 and again in 2027. Hamburg is demonstrating far beyond local and national borders how a major city strengthens public transport as the backbone of the mobility transition, rethinks street space for everyone, and puts people back at the center of transport policy. At the UITP Summit, we will not only showcase our flagship projects such as autonomous on-demand shuttles and the electrification of Hamburg's bus fleet, but we also see the congress as an opportunity to share and discuss the sector's responses to challenges in the areas of climate, environment, health, and quality of life with the international community. My sincere thanks go to our strong consortium consisting of Hamburger Hochbahn, Hamburg Messe und Congress, and MOIA."
The UITP Summit 2025 is designed as an interactive event: In addition to the congress program and traditional exhibition spaces spanning six halls, the professional audience will also be presented with concrete examples that showcase the breadth of Hamburg’s mobility transition. Seventeen flagship projects with city partners have been defined for presentation at the congress, with technical visits allowing participants to experience them firsthand. These include the expansion and modernization of the subway network, the electrification of Hamburg's bus fleet, the ALIKE project by Hamburger Hochbahn and MOIA for autonomous on-demand shuttles, and the "Radkultur" cycling project. Start-ups will have the opportunity to present their ideas and network in a specially designated area. Interested parties can apply for a spot via the official congress website. During the UITP Summit, the annual VDV conference will also take place. On June 14, 2025, the UITP Summit will open its doors to the public: The Mobility Festival will take place in the city center. Diverse and interactive formats aim to engage visitors and bring the goals and possibilities of the mobility transition closer to them.
Robert Henrich, Chairman of the Board of Hamburger Hochbahn AG, stated: "As hosts of the UITP Congress, we are proud to make the mobility of tomorrow tangible in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and to present our many projects for a sustainable and integrated mobility system. At the same time, we look forward to learning from international experts and engaging in dialogue to jointly develop responses to the pressing challenges in the areas of climate, environment, health, and quality of life."
Sascha Meyer, CEO of MOIA, said: "The UITP Summit is the central platform for exchanging ideas and innovation in public transport. We see it as an ideal opportunity to engage with international experts on the trends and challenges in the mobility sector and to present solutions 'made in Hamburg,' such as our system for autonomous driving in public, shared transport. International guests will experience how shared mobility becomes more needs-based, comfortable, and accessible for everyone – while also providing answers to the pressing challenges of our time. I look forward to close collaboration with Hamburger Hochbahn, Hamburg Messe, BVM, and other partners."
The central venues of the UITP Summit are the exhibition grounds and the CCH. Currently, about 85 percent of the space has been booked for next year. Deutsche Bahn, Siemens, and MAN are among the participants. "Mobility has been a very important and recurring topic in the event portfolio of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH for decades. The UITP Summit is of great significance for us in two respects: With our venue and buildings in the center of a metropolis, we are always directly affected by transport developments and thus rely on smart and functioning transport concepts. Furthermore, as a municipal company, it is our top priority to support Hamburg’s mobility initiatives while also contributing to the advancement of international public transport. We are very pleased to welcome the UITP Summit on our premises twice in the coming years," said Uwe Fischer, CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.
The City of Hamburg, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), the Hamburg Transport Association (hvv), and more than 75 other partners from business, academia, and associations supported Hamburg's bid. Daniela Kluckert, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, said: "Digitalization, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving are opening up new mobility forms that not only make transport safer and more resource-efficient but also enable more flexible on-demand solutions. This allows gaps in service to be efficiently closed, and staff shortages to be mitigated through the targeted use of autonomous technologies. Germany is a global leader and innovation driver in mobility, especially in the field of artificial intelligence and autonomous mobility. That’s why I am particularly pleased that we can showcase our innovative flagship projects to a broad international audience during the UITP Summit in Hamburg – the metropolitan model region for mobility – and thereby underscore Germany's leading role in shaping forward-looking mobility." The federal government is providing 8 million euros in funding for the hosting of both UITP Summits in 2025 and 2027.
