AI Takes Over Safety Tasks in Autonomous Operations

In collaboration with emotion3D, MOIA has developed an AI solution for interior analysis in the self-driving, fully electric ID. Buzz AD from Volkswagen.

The software automates safety tasks that were previously performed by the driving personnel. It checks, for example, the number of passengers and whether they have correctly fastened their seat belts. It also automatically detects if the doors are clear, if an object is blocking the cabin floor, or how bright it is inside the vehicle. Within seconds, the AI-supported software grants clearance for the self-driving vehicle to proceed or hands over control to the control center if necessary. In such cases, the control center can grant clearance remotely and communicate with passengers via an audio connection.

Interior analysis is often an underestimated but crucial component of an autonomous mobility service. By situationally monitoring the interior, driver-related tasks are automated, ensuring that passengers can travel safely and comfortably during autonomous ride-pooling.

Safety is our top priority at MOIA,” says Ralf Siegmund, Chief Technology Officer at MOIA. “The technology from emotion3D allows us to decouple the driver from the vehicle without compromising safety or customer experience. We aim to set an industry standard with this.” The analysis of the passenger cabin is a key element in providing future passengers with the highest level of safety and comfort during autonomous operations.

In the coming months, customer experiences with the automated processes will be tested in Hamburg. Safety drivers will be on board during this phase to further monitor the processes. Currently, tests are being conducted without test customers, focusing on driving functions and the future virtual stop network.

Autonomous driving is crucial for MOIA to accelerate the expansion of ridepooling and promote sustainable mobility in cities. Integrated, digitized processes, as well as electric and autonomous fleets, are essential for modern transportation systems and our continued development. Close partnerships, such as with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles for the ID. Buzz AD, and the city of Hamburg as a testing environment, are essential building blocks for the successful deployment of autonomous mobility services.
